What's A Girl Gotta Do?
Sparkle Hayter
No Exit pbk, 270 pgs, £6.99
Review by Gerald Houghton (1997)

Third string TV reporter Robin Hudson works Special Reports for the All News Network, checking out crooked sperm banks after that Unfortunate Incident at the White House. Then come New Year's there's a party for all the newsies at a local hotel and a rust-haired man approaches Robin with the results of a secret surveillance. Of her. Before fetching up dead. And guess whose name's in the frame?

Hayter, former TV news bod herself, brings a sprinkle of intrigue to this ostensible murder mystery but is clearly more taken with its possibilities as ego-pricking satire. She's doing a decent enough job, for sure, but the targets - ex-husbands, vacuous anchors, power-suited execs - are obvious and her gags well telegraphed. It does its job, but since its job lacks ambition ends up reading exactly as you'd expect a book written by someone called Sparkle to read.
